Genjô Sanzô, un moine pour le moins marginal, est chargé par la déesse Kanzenon de trouver l'origine du changement soudain de comportement des monstres. Il quitte donc le Temple du Soleil en compagnie de Gokû, un démon à l'apparence juvénile et naïve, à la rencontre des deux autres puissants démons que sont Sa Gojô et Chô Hakkai.
